Empty it, then decide

Pull everything to the driveway or lawn first. Sorting inside a full space forces you to move the same items repeatedly.

Set hard rules before you start

Decide in advance what earns a keep: used in the last two years, currently functional, genuinely irreplaceable. Rules made mid-sort tend to collapse.

Watch for hazardous leftovers

Garages and basements hide old paint, solvents, fertilizer, propane cylinders and car fluids. Set those aside for a household hazardous waste drop-off.

Right-size the container

A single-bay garage typically fits a 10 yard container; a packed two-car garage or full basement usually needs 15 to 20 yards.
